The Wegovy Diet Plan: What to Eat (and Avoid) for Best Results

Wegovy changes how you eat. The medication powerfully suppresses your appetite, making it much easier to eat less. But what you actually put on your plate determines whether you lose body fat or valuable muscle.

In Kuwait, where about 78 out of 100 adults are overweight or obese [kuwait_obesity_data], getting your diet right while on semaglutide is incredibly important. You cannot just eat whatever you want in smaller amounts.

Here is the evidence-based guide to eating on Wegovy, using data from the major clinical trials and the latest 2025 medical guidelines.

Protein first, every meal, no exceptions

The single most important dietary rule when taking Wegovy is to eat your protein before anything else on your plate.

The reasoning is simple. Your appetite will be very low. You will frequently find yourself unable to finish your meals. Whatever you eat first is what your body actually gets. If your first few bites are the rice from a machboos or a piece of bread, you will get full before you touch the meat, and your protein intake will fall dangerously short.

In the STEP 1 clinical trial, people lost an average of 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks [step1_nejm]. That sounds fantastic on the surface. However, up to 45% of that lost weight was lean muscle mass [step_dxa_substudy]. That is far higher than the normal weight-loss benchmark, where muscle loss shouldn't exceed 25%. Losing that much muscle slows down your metabolism and makes you physically weaker.

How much protein do you actually need? The standard advice of 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight is not enough when you are losing weight rapidly on medication.

The 2025 Joint Advisory from major obesity and nutrition societies recommends 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight every day [joint_advisory_2025]. They set a hard minimum of 60 grams daily.

If you weigh 85 kg, you should aim for roughly 102 to 136 grams of protein a day. Hitting this target requires deliberate planning when you have zero appetite.

In practice, this means prioritizing dense protein sources: * White fish and salmon * Eggs * Greek yogurt and cottage cheese * Chicken breast * Lean cuts of beef or lamb

A real-world study in France called SEMALEAN looked at patients who prioritized high protein intake and lifted weights. Instead of losing muscle, these patients actually improved their handgrip strength by 4.5 kg over 12 months [semalean_study]. A separate 2025 medical report tracked patients who ate very high protein (up to 2.3 grams per kg) and lifted weights 3 to 5 days a week. One patient actually gained nearly 6% more muscle mass while losing significant body fat [obesity_pillars_2025].

The 500-calorie deficit sweet spot

You do not need to go on an extreme crash diet. The medication does the heavy lifting for you.

Semaglutide naturally reduces how much you eat by 24% to 39% without any conscious restriction [blundell_2017]. That means you are likely eating about 726 fewer calories a day just by taking the injection.

The clinical trials that proved Wegovy works used a simple 500-calorie daily deficit. Trying to starve yourself by eating 800 or 1,000 calories a day backfires for three specific reasons:

  1. Your metabolism crashes. Very low-calorie diets drop your resting energy expenditure by 17% after just eight weeks [metabolism_study]. A moderate 500-calorie deficit does not cause this metabolic slowdown.
  2. You lose more muscle. Extreme restriction accelerates the muscle loss that is already a risk with GLP-1 therapy.
  3. You miss out on vitamins. A 2025 study found that people on medications like Wegovy are already falling short on calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins A, C, D, E, and K [glp1_nutrition_2025]. Restricting your food volume even further deepens these nutritional holes.

The short answer is to focus on food quality and hitting your protein goals, rather than trying to eat as little as humanly possible.

Managing the stomach issues during dose escalation

Stomach upset is the most common hurdle on Wegovy. If you feel sick, you are not alone.

Data from over 3,300 patients in the STEP trials showed that about 73 out of 100 people experienced some kind of stomach-related side effect [step_pooled_gi]. Nausea is the most common, affecting roughly 44 out of 100 people. Diarrhea affects about 30%, and vomiting affects 24%. Constipation is also very common, lasting a median of 47 days for those who get it.

The reassuring news is that 99.5% of these side effects are mild to moderate. They usually peak during the first few months when you are increasing your dose, and they tend to level off around week 20.

Foods that make nausea worse These side effects happen because Wegovy slows down how fast your stomach empties. Therefore, foods that already digest slowly will create a "double-slowing" effect.

  • Fried and high-fat foods: French fries, fried chicken, and heavy cream sauces will sit in your stomach for hours. This causes prolonged bloating and nausea.
  • High-sugar foods: Sweets cause your blood sugar to spike and then crash, which makes nausea feel much worse.
  • Carbonated drinks: Sodas and sparkling water add gas to a stomach that is already full and emptying slowly.
  • Spicy foods: Heavy spices can irritate your stomach lining and trigger the acid reflux that often comes with delayed digestion.

Foods that help settle your stomach When you are actively dealing with nausea, you need foods that are gentle on your digestive system.

  • Bland proteins: Scrambled eggs, grilled chicken breast, and plain Greek yogurt.
  • The BRAT diet: Bananas, plain rice, applesauce, and toast are easy to digest when you feel sick.
  • Broth-based soups: These have high water content, digest quickly, and help prevent dehydration.
  • Ginger: This actually works. A 2023 study found that taking ginger capsules (providing 84 mg of active gingerols a day) significantly improved nausea [ginger_rct]. Ginger helps your stomach contract and move food along, directly fighting the medication's slowing effect. You can find ginger supplements in most major pharmacies in Kuwait.
  • Peppermint tea: Many doctors recommend this to soothe the stomach, though doctors aren't sure yet if it works specifically for Wegovy nausea or just general upset stomachs.

Worth noting: Eat 4 to 5 small meals a day instead of 3 large ones. Smaller portions keep your stomach from stretching too much. Also, cold foods are often easier to tolerate than hot, strong-smelling foods when you feel nauseous.

Hydration: Drink between meals, not during

Getting enough water is both more important and harder to do when you are on Wegovy.

The baseline recommendation is at least 2 liters (about 64 ounces) of water daily. Given the intense summer heat in Kuwait, you likely need more if you spend any time outdoors.

Timing your water intake is the secret to avoiding discomfort. Because your stomach empties slowly, drinking a large glass of water right before or during a meal will make you feel uncomfortably full very quickly. You will run out of room for your food, making it impossible to hit your protein goals.

Keep a water bottle with you and sip steadily throughout the day. Try to stop drinking about 30 minutes before you sit down to eat, and wait 30 minutes after you finish your meal before drinking again.

Navigating Kuwait's food culture

Social eating is a massive part of life in Kuwait. Late-night dinners, heavy rice dishes, and weekly family gatherings can be tricky to navigate when your appetite is low and your stomach is sensitive.

You do not have to skip social events. Just change your strategy.

If you are at a gathering, fill your plate with the grilled meats first—shish tawook, tikka, or the meat from the machboos. Take only a small portion of rice. Skip the heavy fried starters like samboosa or fatayer if you know the oil triggers your nausea.

Common Questions

Can I eat fast food on Wegovy? You can, but you probably won't want to. High-fat meals from fast food chains digest very slowly. Eating a heavy burger and fries will likely leave you feeling bloated, nauseous, or dealing with acid reflux for hours. If you do eat out, look for grilled options instead of fried.

Do I need to drink protein shakes? They are not mandatory, but they are incredibly useful. During the weeks you increase your dose, your appetite might disappear entirely. A protein shake from a local pharmacy or supermarket is an easy, low-volume way to get 20 to 30 grams of protein without forcing down solid food.

What if I have zero appetite and can't eat? This happens often during dose escalation. Do not force yourself to eat a large meal, as this will cause vomiting. Switch to 4 or 5 very small "mini-meals" throughout the day. Focus entirely on protein and hydration until your appetite slightly returns.

Does Wegovy stop me from constantly thinking about food? Yes. Many people experience a massive reduction in "food noise"—that constant mental chatter about your next meal or craving snacks.
