How to Store Wegovy in Kuwait: Temperature Rules and Travel Tips

The short answer is: keep your Wegovy pens in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. If you need to, you can keep a pen out of the fridge for up to 28 days, as long as the temperature stays between 8°C and 30°C [novo_nordisk_canada].

In many parts of the world, "room temperature" is a simple concept. In Kuwait, it is a bit more complicated. During our long summer, a parked car can reach 60°C in minutes. Even indoors, if your air conditioning shuts off while you are at work, your apartment can easily cross that 30°C safety limit.

Wegovy is a biologic medication. The active ingredient, semaglutide, is a delicate peptide that breaks down when exposed to extreme heat, freezing cold, or direct sunlight. If the medication breaks down, it stops working. Given the cost of these pens in KWD, proper Wegovy storage is something you want to get right from the moment you leave the pharmacy.

Here is exactly how to handle your medication at home, in the car, and when traveling.

The Basic Rules of Wegovy Temperature

You will pick up your Wegovy prescription in a box containing four single-dose pens. Because you only use one pen a week, the last pen in the box needs to stay fresh for nearly a month.

In the Fridge (Long-Term Storage) Your primary storage spot should always be the refrigerator. The ideal Wegovy temperature is between 2°C and 8°C [asda_health].

Where you place the box inside the fridge matters. Do not put it in the door. Every time you open the fridge to grab milk or water, the items in the door are hit with a blast of warm air. These constant temperature swings are hard on the medication.

Do not push the box all the way to the back of the fridge, either. The back wall is often the coldest spot, and sometimes moisture freezes there. If your Wegovy pen freezes, it is permanently ruined. Even if it thaws out later, the freezing process destroys the semaglutide proteins.

The best spot is on a middle shelf, toward the front or center, away from the cooling vents. Keep the pens in their original cardboard carton. This protects them from the light bulb inside your fridge and prevents accidental damage.

Out of the Fridge (Short-Term Storage) Sometimes you cannot keep the pens in the fridge. You might be traveling, or you might just prefer taking the injection when the liquid is at room temperature so it stings less.

You can safely keep Wegovy outside the refrigerator for up to 28 days [goodrx_storage].

There is a catch. The temperature must remain between 8°C and 30°C. In Kuwait, this means you need to be absolutely certain your home's air conditioning is reliable. If you turn your AC off when you leave for the weekend, or if you set it to 28°C and the afternoon sun hits that specific room, you risk crossing the 30°C threshold.

If you are going to keep a pen out of the fridge, leave it in a cool, dark place like a bedroom drawer. Never leave it on a bathroom counter where shower steam can heat the room, and never leave it on a windowsill.

Surviving the Pharmacy Run in Kuwait

Many people ruin their medication before they even get it home.

Let's say it is July. It is 48°C outside. You pick up your prescription from a pharmacy in Hawally or Salmiya. The pharmacist hands you the cold box.

Go straight home. Do not leave the box in your car while you run into the Avenues or stop for groceries. Even if you park in the shade, the inside of a car heats up fast enough to destroy the medication in less than an hour.

If you have a long drive home, or if you have to make stops, plan ahead. Bring a small insulated cooler bag with an ice pack. When you place the Wegovy box in the cooler, make sure the ice pack does not directly touch the cardboard box. Wrap the ice pack in a small towel. You want to keep the pens cool, not freeze them.

If you do not have a cooler bag, keep the box in the main cabin of your car with the AC running. Never put it in the trunk.

Traveling with Wegovy

Expats and locals in Kuwait travel frequently, especially to escape the summer heat. Taking your medication with you requires a bit of planning.

Flying Out of Kuwait International Airport If you are flying, your Wegovy must go in your carry-on bag. Never put it in your checked luggage. The cargo hold of an airplane can drop below freezing during the flight. If your pens freeze in your suitcase, you will arrive at your destination with ruined medication.

Airport security at KWI and other major airports are very used to seeing injectable medications. You do not need to declare it unless asked, but it is always smart to keep the pens in their original box with the prescription label attached. This proves the medication belongs to you.

Using Travel Coolers If your trip is shorter than 28 days and you are traveling to a destination where the room temperature stays below 30°C, you do not technically need to keep the pens cold during the flight. They will be fine at room temperature.

That said, many people prefer to use medical travel coolers just to be safe. These are small, insulated thermos-like containers that come with a gel ice pack shaped to fit around medication pens. You can find them in many large pharmacies in Kuwait or order them online.

If you use a travel cooler, follow the same rule as the car: do not let the frozen gel pack touch the pens directly. Let the gel pack sit on the counter for five minutes before putting it in the cooler so the sharpest cold dissipates.

Ramadan and Chalet Weekends During Ramadan, or when heading to a chalet in Bnaider or Julai'a for the weekend, you might need to take a pen with you to stay on your injection schedule.

If you are just taking one pen for a weekend dose, you don't need to worry about keeping it on ice, provided the car is air-conditioned and the chalet is cool. Just keep it in your bag, out of direct sunlight.

Power Outages: What to Do

While Kuwait's power grid is generally stable, summer peak loads can sometimes cause localized power outages.

If the power goes out in your apartment, do not panic. Keep the refrigerator door closed. A modern fridge will hold its temperature for about 4 hours if you do not open the door.

If the power is out for longer than that, your fridge will slowly warm up to room temperature. Since Wegovy can survive at room temperature for 28 days, your pens are not instantly ruined. However, the "28-day clock" has now started.

Once the power comes back on and the fridge cools down, the pens will get cold again. You can continue to use them, but you should aim to use that specific box of pens within the next few weeks, just to be safe.

How to Tell if Your Wegovy is Ruined

Sometimes mistakes happen. You leave the pen in the car, or it gets pushed to the back of the fridge and freezes. How do you know if it is still safe to use?

Before you take your dose, look at the medication through the small glass window on the side of the pen.

The liquid inside should be completely clear and colorless. It should look exactly like water.

Do not use the pen if: * The liquid looks cloudy. * The liquid has a yellow or brown tint. * You see little white particles or flakes floating in it. * The liquid is frozen solid.

If you see any of these signs, the semaglutide has degraded. Injecting it is not necessarily dangerous in a toxic sense, but it will not work. You will not get the appetite-suppressing effects, and you might experience different side effects. You have to throw the pen away.

Common Questions

Can I put Wegovy back in the fridge after it has been at room temperature? Yes, you can put it back in the fridge. However, cooling it back down does not reset the 28-day clock. If the pen has been sitting out at 25°C for ten days, putting it back in the fridge does not mean you get another full month of shelf life. You still need to use it within 28 days from the first time it reached room temperature.

What happens if I accidentally leave the cap off? Wegovy pens are designed to be kept with the cap on until the exact moment you are ready to inject. The cap protects the medication from light and keeps the needle mechanism clean. If the cap comes off in your fridge or bag, the manufacturer recommends throwing the pen away to avoid the risk of infection or degraded medication.

How do I translate "Wegovy storage" to Arabic for my pharmacist? If you are speaking with a local pharmacist and want to ask about proper handling, the terms you need are تخزين ويجوفي (takhzeen Wegovy) which means Wegovy storage, or حفظ ويجوفي (hifz Wegovy) which means keeping/preserving Wegovy. Most pharmacists in Kuwait speak excellent English, but these terms help if there is a language barrier.

Do I need to store used pens differently? Wegovy pens are single-use. Unlike some other weight-loss medications where you use the same pen for a month and change the needle, a Wegovy pen delivers one dose and then locks itself. Once you have used it, you simply throw the entire pen away in a sharps container. You do not need to store empty pens in the fridge.
